Caravan trips should offer a home from home experience, taking all the comforts of your house on holiday. And a key component of that is a good refrigeration system. But which is best for you, caravan refrigerators or electric coolboxes?
A good caravan fridge will offer a choice of power supply to suit wherever you set up camp. For example, Dometic Combicool fridges run just as well on your car's 12 volt power supply as they do on a 240 volt mains supply found on a campsite or at home. In addition, these caravan refrigerators will also run on Butane or Propane.
At the other end of the scale are electric coolboxes, such as the Campingaz Powerbox, which are a lot cheaper and portable so can be used on caravan holidays or camping trips. Although these often have 12 volt and 240 volt settings they are often intended to keep food cool whilst travelling as they can drain the battery of a stationary vehicle.
These coolboxes may be a better option for a caravan holiday as they are electrically cooled whilst the engine is running but are sufficiently insulated so as to stay cool for a while after the vehicle has stopped.
Somewhere in between is the Waeco Mobicool, an awning cooler cabinet with a compressor to provide cooling and deep freeze capabilities and a thermoelectric cooling unit that can keep cool temperatures whilst the unit is transferred from the home to the campsite.
So before setting off on a caravan or camping holiday, make sure you know which is best for you, an electric caravan fridge or coolbox.
